Since 2006, SSM has been managing the Oyu Tolgoi site, which is located in the Gobi desert, 800 km from the capital Ulan Bator.
At the initiative of our Mongolian client, a documentary on the Oyu Tolgoi site was produced highlighting full catering services and know-how of our subsidiary SSM within the site: butchery and pastry shop, typical Mongolian and European dishes, preparation of takeaway meals, themed evenings, quality control on tablet and nutrition follow-up.
More than 6,000 residents are cared for by our Mongolian staff every day, with a 24/7 service. The site has the largest kitchen in the Gobi region, where SSM manages over 200 kitchen collaborators.
"Our main goal here is to make sure to feed our miners with healthy and good food, and make them feel like at home",
Debendra Shrestha, Catering Manager
Supply is also a big issue. SSM centralises its suppliers' deliveries daily in its warehouse on the outskirts of Ulan Bator, where the products are checked and stored. In a few figures, more than 36 tonnes of frozen meat and dairy products per week, and up to 48 tonnes of dry goods, disposable cleaning products and packaged meals per week are unloaded, stored and then shipped to the mine site, in the heart of the Gobi Desert. Warehouse, purchasing and on-site teams communicate constantly to coordinate logistics and ensure that the Oyu Tolgoi site is well supplied.
"In total, more than 240 trucks with 4,000 tons of products pass through our warehouse every year,"
says Selenge Dovdon, Warehouse Manager.
Listening to the needs, satisfying the residents and being responsive are the strengths of SSM, which has been working with Oyu Tolgoi for 15 years.
