Tiago, congratulations on your 10th anniversary with CIS! As QHSE coordinator and nutritionist, can you describe your role and missions?

Thank you very much! As QHSE Coordinator and Nutritionist, I ensure QHSE compliance in our subsidiaries, overseeing audits, training, and the implementation of internal and external standards.

My work also includes integrated excellence management (IEMS), supporting certifications and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

On the nutrition front, I design menus tailored to customer expectations, develop dietetic training sessions and oversee the Health 4 You program, to encourage healthy eating at our sites.

My main objective is to follow up on various issues with all affiliates

How do you adapt your nutritional recommendations to the different cultures and eating habits of the various countries where the Group operates?

For each country, I adapt the recommendations according to culture, religion and eating habits. When a subsidiary is already in place, I draw on my local experience and on our local employees, who provide us with information and recommendations for developing adapted menus. On the other hand, for new countries, I conduct research or consult local contacts via the sales team to find out about dietary preferences and incorporate these specificities into our proposals.

What have been the main changes or advances in the field of nutrition and QHSE over the last decade, and how have they influenced your work within the Group?

Technological advances and sustainability have marked the last ten years. The use of digital tools such as tablets to monitor food safety and customer satisfaction has facilitated operations and reduced our environmental impact. On the nutrition front, the Health 4 You program has gained in visibility, with initiatives such as color coding and the Menu Engineering module, which provides detailed nutritional information for each ingredient.

Although it’s not yet obvious to our customers in the mining and offshore sectors, there is a growing demand for healthy choices and the consideration of healthier, more sustainable options in menus and food preparation.

In collaboration with the Group’s CSR Manager and all working groups, documents have also been prepared on sustainability in terms of menus, for example by using more vegetable proteins, or reducing food waste. Nutritional awareness has been reinforced through monthly topics promoting healthy eating habits throughout the Group.

How do you see the future of nutrition and QHSE within the Group, and what innovations or initiatives would you like to see developed in the coming years?

The future of nutrition and QHSE will be technology-driven. In terms of nutrition, I think that customers will be increasingly obliged to set up health programs at their various sites, and it is highly likely that they will start asking companies like CIS to always have a nutritionist/dietitian on their team to be able to run nutrition and health programs.

In QHSE, I’d like to see a synchronized digital platform, accessible on any device, enabling real-time data collection.

AI and data analysis will also play a role in anticipating and preventing risks, making our processes ever greener and more efficient.

Is there a memorable anecdote or key moment in your career here that you’d like to share?

One memorable moment was when I was leaving for Eritrea, and ended up being rerouted to Mozambique at the last minute when I was already on the plane, demonstrating the unpredictability of our profession. Another memory is my birthday at -45°C in Chukotka, Russia. To get to this very remote place, we had to take a customer’s flight, and I think it was the scariest flight I’ve ever had in my life.

The hardest thing about being an expat is that you don’t get to spend as much time with your family as you’d like, but my wife has always supported me and I’m grateful to her for that, and arriving home safe and sound to see her and my children is always my number one goal, according to the saying “safety first”: arrive safe and sound – work safe and sound – come home safe and sound.

Do you have a quote that you keep in mind to guide your day-to-day decisions, whether in your professional or personal life?

I like the quote from Hippocrates: “Let your food be your medicine”, which invites us to promote well-being through our choices. Another I really like: “No safety, know pain. Know safety, no pain”, reminding us of the importance of safety in our daily lives.
