OUR INITIATIVES & ACTIONS

In support of protecting the environment

CIS Group and its subsidiaries are actively committed to preserving the environment, taking into account the local context of the sites of operation. We are implementing innovative solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of our activities and promote the circular economy. By raising our employees’ awareness about environmental issues, we are helping to create more responsible generations.

REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT

From our activities

Climate change is a serious threat to our planet and to society as a whole.

Since 2023, CIS Group has included a carbon module in its internal management tools. This carbon module, based on Agribalyse data from the French Agency for Ecological Transition, or ADEME, covers the emissions generated by more than 80% of CIS Group’s activity (raw material purchases, transport and catering). The main areas where we should take action at Group level are energy, the consumption of animal protein, especially red meat, and travel to and from work.

Starting in 2024, a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in tonnes of CO2 equivalent per million euros of revenue (tCO2/€m) is set every year. By 2024, CIS Group has reached its target of reducing GHG per million euros of sales.

RAISING AWARENESS

About the causes and consequences of climate change

Change, both internally and with our clients, begins first and foremost with raising employee awareness.

Awareness sessions are organised each year on a specific topic, such as plant proteins, biodiversity, planetary boundaries, circular economy, water footprint of food, pollution.

These sessions provide a valuable opportunity to share views, bring about new ideas, and integrate new environmentally friendly habits into daily practices.

TOWARDS

More responsible use of resources

In our countries of operation, where we are restricted by the local energy mix, studies are being conducted in collaboration with our clients to find alternative, cost-effective solutions to power remote sites.

A key example of this is the introduction of photovoltaic or biomass energy in the on-site energy mix.

Awareness sessions are held regularly to teach employees about eco-friendly habits and energy efficiency. Displays are available in rooms and bathrooms to improve residents’ sense of accountability about water consumption.

COMBATING

Food waste

As catering is our core business, combating food waste is one of our key challenges. As we operate in the four corners of the world, it is also important to understand our residents’ consumption habits, which vary from country to country.

By implementing tools to more precisely quantify food waste generated over time, we gain a better handle on our consumption and can minimise our environmental impact. We also believe it is important to engage employees and residents in the efforts to reduce food waste.

Either by improving storage, production and service processes, or by implementing awareness campaigns aimed at staff and residents, CIS Group acts at every stage of the value chain to limit food waste at its source.

FIGHTING

Plastic pollution

Managing plastic waste is a major challenge. To tackle this issue, CIS Group has included the reduction of single-use plastics in its purchasing policy.

It encourages the use of recyclable or biodegradable packaging wherever possible. Plastic recovery projects are being studied to identify the most suitable solutions for treatment.

We face several restrictions in our countries of operation due to the lack of local collection and recycling infrastructure.

PROMOTING

And taking an active role in the circular economy

Partnership with The Waste Transformers

Most of the waste generated at sites is from our cleints. As a service integrator that is mindful of this issue, we developed complementary services for treating organic waste.

In 2023, CIS Group forged a partnership with The Waste Transformers. This Dutch company develops containerised anaerobic digesters to transform food waste into energy and fertiliser. This strategic partnership not only addresses the pressing issue of food waste management in remote environments, but also aligns with global efforts to adopt cleaner, more sustainable practices in the mining industry.

This solution is directly in line with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. As such, CIS Group is taking an active role in the circular economy.

PROTECTING

And restoring biodiversity

Since 2024, the CSR Committee at CIS Group headquarters has sponsored a dozen beehives at A.D.A.P. (Association de Défense de l’Abeille en Provence) in Gémenos, near Marseille. To raise awareness about the importance of protecting bees, due to their fundamental role as pollinators, head office employees are invited on an annual visit to the apiaries.

Meanwhile, local reforestation initiatives are under way in our countries of operation in Africa. For example, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a large-scale community reforestation programme was set up in 2024 in partnership with our mining customer in the provinces of Lualaba and Haut-Katanga. The project also includes training local communities and schools in nursery management.

The main purpose of these reforestation projects is to raise the awareness of the local populations on ecology and about preventing soil erosion, sequestering carbon and protecting local biodiversity. For CIS Group, these initiatives are also a source of cohesion and pride.
